DSL Wiring

By Dannjr and Bimmer

This guide is to show you how to rewire the DSL circuit from the phone Company's NID to your modem and hopefully you’ll gain about 100 to 150kbps in speed, lower Latency and even get rid of all the Filters that are attached to your phones.

On This Job.  If you're not technically gifted you might want to find a network tech or neighbor that is.. Please note: In some parts of the world the voltage could be high. Generally in the US its about 48volts to a home. Some places in Canada it can be as high as 240volts. So please dont be standing in a bucket of water when doing this.

Please Note: DSLnuts, Broadbandnuts and all associated with this article will not be held responsible for your lack of knowledge of how to use tools or you blowing up your equipment. If the article is followed you should have no problem with it.

IT'S probably a good idea at some point in the future to replace the filter with a splitter since the filters don't stand up to the changing season's. You can usually find "DSL splitters" by doing a search on the web or a local electrical supply house.

The Following list of tools are needed

1.) Wire stripper

2.) Side cutter or something to cut low voltage wire

3.) Pliers

4.) Very small regular Screw Driver

5.) Medium Screw Driver

6.) A number 2 Phillips head Screw Driver

7.) A Drill and 5/16th Drill bit (may or may not be needed)

We didn’t need the Drill as there was a way to get the line into the home without it.

Also the Cat5e wire we used in this case we had a good amount left over from another Job site. So we were able to make the run. You should be able to get Cat5 or Cat5e at a local Electrical supply, Hardware store or even Radio Shack.

I would rather see if you can get it through the electrical supply store. In a lot of cases it can be cheaper that way for this Job.

This is the Cat5e we used.

Now that you have the hardware list and tools list let's get started.
